LANGLEY, B.C. – BC Hydro is spending $725 million over the next decade in capital construction throughout Langley, B.C. to upgrade and expand the electricity grid.

The Province of British Columbia announced BC Hydro’s updated 10-Year Capital Plan in January with $36 billion committed to regional and community infrastructure investments across B.C., a release said.

“In growing cities like Langley where we are seeing substantial housing, building, transportation and industrial growth, we are embarking on significant upgrades to our electricity system, including investments in new and expanded substation projects as well as major distribution investments to support underground and overhead infrastructure extensions to ensure we can continue to provide reliable and clean electricity to our customers,” BC Hydro CEO president and CEO Chris O’Riley said in a statement.

Langley is experiencing significant growth in the Willoughby, Brookswood and Gloucester neighbourhoods, the release said.

Projects under the 10-Year Capital Plan include:

  • McLellan substation expansion in two phases that are expected to be in service in 2026 and 2028;
  • new Campbell Heights substation in service by 2032;
  • new Willoughby-Clayton substation in service by 2032;
  • major distribution investments to support underground and overhead infrastructure extensions, keeping pace with increased and growing demand in Willoughby-Clayton, Brookswood and Gloucester; and
  • investments in transmission and distribution infrastructure to enable the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain, expected to be complete by spring 2025.

BC Hydro also recently launched a call to power to acquire approximately 3,000 gigawatt hours per year of clean electricity, its first call for power in more than 15 years.
