Federal government puts more than $67 million towards N.W.T. highway upgrades

YELLOWKNIFE, N.W.T. – The Government of аÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û2023 is investing more than $67 million in improvements and upgrades for five major roadways in the Northwest Territories.

The projects announced for Highway 1 and Highway 7 focus on the communities of Fort Liard, Nahanni Butte, Jean Marie River and Fort Simpson and planned upgrades include embankment reconstruction, drainage improvement and chipseal works.

Highway 4, which extends east from Yellowknife, will get grade and drainage improvements, a Housing, Infrastructure and Communities аÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û2023 release said.

The federal government is investing the money through the Rural and Northern Communities Infrastructure stream of the Investing in аÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û2023 Infrastructure Program, the release said.

A breakdown of work on each highway is below.

  • Highway 7 reconstruction – Hamlet of Fort Laird: embankment reconstruction, drainage improvement, resurfacing and chipseal work.
  • Highway 1 reconstruction – Hamlet of Fort Providence: embankment reconstruction, drainage improvement, asphaltic surface treatment, production of materials, culvert and guardrail installation.
  • Highway 8 reconstruction – Town of Inuvik: embankment and subbase reconstruction, drainage improvement, gravel surfacing and production of associated materials.
  • Whatì Access Road Improvements – First Nation of Whati: surveying, geotechnical investigation, embankment and drainage improvements, gravel surfacing, guard rails, signage, installation and construction of a single span bridge.
  • Highway 4 reconstruction – City of Yellowknife: widening embankments, grade improvements, guardrail installation, drainage improvements
